When the downturn comes:

What next for Norwegian shipbuilding?

We – the editors and publishers of this magazine – are convinced that your reading of it, or even just browsing through it, will leave you with the impression that the Norwegian shipbuilding industry is an undisputed success story. In the course of 2006 the yards have delivered quality ships in a constant flow – and the orderbooks are as full as they have never been before. The figures are astonishing: Norwegian yards have in 2006 delivered a record number of ships, all of which presented in this magazine, and the combined orderbook accounted at the turn of the year for NOK 50bn, which is all time high. The industry is obviously well off far into 2010.

As good as it can get?

2006 was a very busy year for the Norwegian shipbuilding industry in general. In focus was evidently the offshore sector with hectic activity illustrated by 38 deliveries of newbuildings covered in SKIPSREVYEN during the year compared to 27 in 2005. The Aker Yards shipbuilders are featuring strongly in this sector capturing 19 of these deliveries. 2006 was also remarkable in the sense that several new designs entered service, including Skipsrevyen’s “Ship of the Year” – M/V “Bourbon Orca”.

The maritime sector – a high-priority sector

Over the past years the Norwegian shipbuilding industry has been characterized by growing enthusiasm and optimism. 2006 turned out to be a record-year, and today the order reserve of Norwegian yards amounts to around 7 billion euro (around 56 billion NOK). These numbers even outshine the exceptional year of 2000, which was our last year with subsidies to the shipbuilding industry. This positive development contributes to securing the activity of Norwegian yards for years to come.
